If it is difficult to swallow medicine, is it okay to crush the tablets or open the capsules and take them?

Some people may not like swallowing tablets or capsules, but each medicine shape has a purpose.
Do not change the dosage unless otherwise instructed.

Why you shouldn't crush medicines
- The drug is designed to release its active ingredients gradually and to maintain its effect (sustained-release formulation).
- It is designed to dissolve in the intestines but not in the stomach (enteric-coated).
- The tablets are coated (with sugar or a film) because the ingredients in the medicine are bitter, have a strong smell, or are hygroscopic.
If the tablets are too large to swallow, some medications contain the same ingredients and are available as powders, syrups, suppositories, or tapes.
There are cases where medicines are crushed or capsules are opened before being dispensed, but this is only done after careful consideration as to whether it is safe to crush the medicine or open the capsule. Please consult your pharmacist at any time if you wish to change the dosage form.
