When should I take the medicine that says "between meals" or "as-needed" on the medicine packet?

Posted by 大慶堂オンラインショップ on April 7, 2022

It can be confusing because there are various times when medicine should be taken, such as before meals, after meals, between meals, or as a quick dose.
However, it's not always good to take it, so be sure to take it at the right time.

①Before meals

"Before meals" means 20 to 30 minutes before a meal.

This is the way to take the medicine when absorption is poor when there is food in the stomach, or when you want it to be effective between meals.
Examples: Anti-nausea medications, Chinese herbal medicines, appetite stimulants, etc.

① Just before a meal

"Just before a meal" means within 10 minutes of a meal.

Simply put, it's the timing of when you pick up your chopsticks! There are some that you want to see results during or immediately after a meal, and some that don't have much effect if you take them after a meal.
Example: diabetes medicine, etc.

③After meals

"After a meal" means up to 30 minutes after finishing a meal.

Having food in your stomach reduces irritation to your stomach and intestines.
Example: Painkillers, steroids, etc.

④ Between meals

"Intermeal" refers to the time between meals, approximately two hours after a meal.

Simply put, take it on an empty stomach. This instruction is included for medicines whose effects are easily affected by food.
Example: Medicines used when you have an upset stomach, Chinese herbal medicine, etc.

⑤Before going to bed

"Before bedtime" means about 30 minutes before you go to sleep.

Considering the time it takes for the medication to take effect, it may be a good idea to take it around this time.
It takes some time for the medicine to reach the stomach, so try not to lie down for about 10 minutes after taking it.
Example: Sleeping pills, laxatives, etc.

⑥ Tompuku (instantaneous medicine)

"Quick dose" means to take medicine when needed.

There is no set time to take the medicine, and once the symptoms have disappeared, you no longer need to take it.
Take it when you have symptoms as prescribed by your doctor.
Example: Painkillers, laxatives, etc.

Q: What should I do if I forget to take my medicine?

A: Never take two doses at once!
If you realize that you have missed a dose and it has not been long since the scheduled time, take the missed dose right away.
The time you should wait before taking your next dose will vary depending on the medication. Be sure to consult with your pharmacist.
